Why this role matters

The Salvation Army Australia's Family Violence Stream provides a wide range of services around the country to support women and women with children impacted by family and domestic violence. We offer refuge, children's and parenting services, counselling, support, men's programs, accommodation and advice to women and children who are experiencing, or who have experienced, family violence.

 

About the role

We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Family Violence Counsellor, at our Mackay location. Reporting to the Team Leader, this is a part-time, fixed-term position offering 30.4 hours per week, until 30th January, 2026.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Health Professional Award, level 3.

 

You will successfully

  • Deliver specialist family violence counselling interventions and group work to women who have experienced family violence.
  • Establish and maintain resources relevant to supporting women and children who are experiencing family violence.
  • Proactively participate in, and support networks that are improving outcomes for women and children experiencing family violence.
  • Apply an intersectional feminist analysis and deep understanding of the gendered nature of family violence, works with clients' strengths, and utilises their expertise in counselling and/or therapeutic models, skills, techniques, and modalities.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions and counselling to women who have experienced family violence (including group work)
  • Provide professional and confidential counselling to women who have experienced or are experiencing family violence, in order to effectively reduce risks to their safety and enable their long-term recovery
  • Use professional risk assessment and best practice in safety planning in line with the FV Stream protocols, procedures and clinical governance framework.
  • Engage appropriate risk management follow-up as required.

You will have (Requisite Skills & Qualifications)

  • Degree qualification in counselling or equivalent required
  • At least 3 years of experience in a counsellor or similar position required
  • Be a member and registered with a relevant accredited peak body (AASW, APS, ACA etc)
  • Experience in counselling women who have experienced trauma
  • Experience with women and children who have experienced family violence.
  • A current Working With Children Check, QLD Blue Card is required
