Health & Safety Superintendent

Job Description

Your role will be to establish a health and safety culture in the workforce, strategically leading the Health and Safety team to deliver best practice outcomes in health, safety, occupational hygiene, and injury management/prevention. The role involves providing leadership through effective coaching, mentoring, and high levels of communication, engagement, and influence.

The Mount Morgan Tailings Processing and Rehabilitation project is currently in its construction phase with the aim of being operational in the second half of 2025.  The workforce will increase to around 140 so now is the time to  establish the culture.

This is a full-time permanent position based in Rockhampton/Mt Morgan. This is not a FIFO role.  The successful applicant may apply for a relocation grant.

Responsibilities

  1. Establish, lead, and monitor safety, health, and occupational hygiene programs and systems (HMS).
  2. To ensure all site staff are kept up to date with developments in health and safety.
  3. Drive the continuous improvement of safety, health, and occupational hygiene practices. 
  4. Lead and mentor a team of multi-disciplinary technical professionals and contractors.
  5. Maintain compliance with statutory obligations and regulators. 
  6. Oversee the management of workers' compensation, injury prevention, and injury management processes. 
  7. Manage and audit the site compliance with legislation and HMS. 
  8. Lead and facilitate incident investigations, including ICAMs 
  9. Review and analyse completed investigations to ensure that contributing factors and root causes are identified, and corrective actions are appropriate to prevent recurrence
  10. Develop, implement and manage an appropriate First Response capability to meet the sites needs 
  11. Establish, train and lead mines rescue team.
  12. To develop and manage the Training Register and the VOC process and certification.

Essential requirements

1. Degree/Diploma in Health & Safety with a thorough understanding of leading practice H&S management techniques.
2. S123 or G1-G8-G9 (QMS) or equivalent
3. Return to Work Coordinator course
4. ICAM Investigators course
5. Cert IV Training & Assessment
6. Current Queensland Driver's Licence Class (C)
7. Min 10 years’ relevant experience.
8. Significant experience in the mining industry.
9. A track record in achieving high levels of safety, health and occupational hygiene performance.
10. An in depth understanding of Queensland mining legislation.
11. Experience with facilitating and report writing of ICAM investigation with a focus on organisational failings
