Job Description

Purpose of the Role

As the Language and Cultural Officer, you will lead the implementation of Darumbal languagge across Nullu Badi Ngudyubay Academy (NBNA), providing First Nations students with the necessary support to enable them to successfully complete secondary school, by guiding the development of culturally safe learning environments and increasing the NBNA community's knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of First Nations cultures.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and support the implementation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language Framework (Darumbal) Language program at NBNA.

  • Evaluate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language Framework (Darumbal) Language program and provide advice to Principal on continuous improvement and best practice approaches.

  • Collect, collate and analyse quantitative and qualitative data relating to the teaching and learning of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language Framework (Darumbal) Language program.

  • Provide updated reports and briefings on the Darumbal Language programs as required.

  • Work collaboratively with the NBNA to develop language and cultural resources.

  • Providing professional development activities for Darumbal Language teachers and educators delivering the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language Framework (Darumbal) Language program.

  • Provide advice and information to school administrators regarding Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and cultural protocols in order to meet the needs of schools and their communities.

  • Provide information to the school community about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and cultural perspectives.

  • Developing Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) that are strengths based and incorporates student voice; reflect the aspirational goals of students; and links to cultural heritage, land and country.

  • Providing students with in-class support, to enhance their engagement with the curriculum and learning outcomes.

  • Participate in the development of activities and services, in and out of school, likely to enhance the involvement in education of NBNA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.

  • Establish and maintain links with out of school sources of information and support services to assist in the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and students.

  • Promoting and organising activities for Indigenous students with their families.

  • Ensure that relevant information concerning Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and cultural issues is readily available to all members of the school community.

  • Coordinate and lead workshops and consultation with Staff, Families, communities and organisations.

  • Enhancing the appreciation and understanding of cultural safety, self-determination, and the importance of Indigenous cultures amongst non-Indigenous students and their families.

  • Encouraging the involvement of the local Indigenous community in NBNA events and activities.

  • Lead Community of Practice CQ in Tunuba Charter and play an active role in language revitalisation.

  • Developing authentic partnerships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to support the NBNA boards commitment to the Closing the Gap national agreement.

  • Other suitable duties, consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position as directed by the supervisor or nominated delegate.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate capability in the following areas:

Mandatory Requirement

In accordance with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 a person is prohibited from working in regulated child-related employment unless the person holds a current Working with Children Check clearance (Blue Card) issued by Blue Card Services.

Essential

  • Holds a current C Class Queensland Driver's Licence

  • Holds or willing to obtain a First Aid and CPR Certificate

Desirable

  • An awareness and understanding of First Nations communities and cultures and the historical and contemporary issues to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, and proven capacity to communicate appropriately.

  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office software and desktop applications

Selection Criteria applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • Sound understanding and fluency in Darumbal language.

  • A relevant experience in working with young First Nations people in an education/training field.

  • Demonstrated through understanding of the issues, directions and challenges in first Nations education including cultural safety.

  • Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with First Nations people and other people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement, sensitivity and assertiveness in supporting students who are managing a range of academic and personal pressures.

  • Demonstrated high level of organisation skills with the ability to negotiate and problem solve and handle highly sensitive information with discretion and integrity.

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning.
