Library Assistant

Job Description

What you will doing:

This is a customer‑focused, hands‑on role supporting the day‑to‑day operations of Council’s library services. You will:

  • Deliver high-quality customer service in person and via telephone
  • Assist with the accurate circulation of library resources and related transactions
  • Support customers with basic resource discovery, library technology, and self‑service equipment
  • Resolve straightforward customer enquiries related to overdue, lost, or returned items
  • Shelve library materials accurately and efficiently
  • Undertake cash handling, bookings, and administrative tasks as required
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of library programs for adults, children, and young people
  • Role model Council’s Values and Behaviours and maintain a high standard of professional conduct
  • Escalate matters as required to supervisors or managers

  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • The ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast‑paced public environment
  • Confidence using computer systems, including library management systems and Microsoft Office
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy
  • Previous experience in a library or familiarity with automated library systems (highly regarded)

Mandatory requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a current Blue Card (regulated employment – Working with Children)
  • Current C‑class driver licence
  • Availability to work across different library locations and weekend shifts, as required
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, including standing, shelving, and manual handling

Desirable

  • Certificate II or III in Library Service
