Media and Communications Officer - Andrew Willcox MP

Job Description

An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic individual to fill a full-time ongoing position of Media and Communications Officer for the Federal Member for Dawson, Andrew Willcox MP, based in Mackay, Queensland 4740.

The successful applicant will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to establish professional relationships with key stakeholders across Dawson as well as local and national media.

This role would suit someone with proven experience in journalism, communications and/or marketing, and who is excited by the opportunity of serving their community.

 

The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to: 

  • developing communications/marketing plans
  • drafting media releases and electorate communications material
  • managing social media
  • enhancing the Member’s social media presence 
  • managing the Member’s website
  • liaising with local and national journalists, and organising proactive media opportunities
  • preparing speech notes for local events
  • preparing speeches for parliamentary commitments and legislation 
  • developing and managing advertising campaigns through traditional and online media, including video content
  • photography/videography at events
  • media monitoring
  • preparing the Member’s newsletter
  • travelling throughout the electorate and to Canberra for parliamentary sittings when required
  • assisting with electorate events and activities as needed

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

  • a tertiary qualification in journalism, communications, public relations and/or marketing, with work experience in a related role will be highly regarded
  • the capability to provide strategic media and communications advice
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop concise, targeted messages to reach various audiences
  • knowledge of and experience with social media platforms and engagement strategies
  • highly developed attention to detail and design, ensuring messages and published content are accurate and professional
  • organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks to meet tight deadlines
  • a keen interest in and/or understanding of Australian government and the parliamentary process
  • photography/videography skills
  • graphic design and video editing experience, especially with the Adobe Creative Suite, will be highly regarded.

 

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23 which include:

  • A commencing salary between $81,666 and $83,179 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
  • An additional optional allowance of between $12,907 and $27,963 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable

 

An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.
