Reporting to the Manager of Environment, this role supports the Qld Ports Association (QPA) Executive Chair and the Chair of QPA Environment, Planning and Sustainability (EPS) Working Group, providing policy guidance and secretariat services.
The purpose of Qld Ports Association is to ensure that Queensland Port Authorities work collectively on matters of common interest and support port policy development, governance and implementation.
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- Schedule QPA Executive and EPS Working Group meetings, taking and distributing minutes.
- Support Chair of QPA Executive and Chair of EPS WG with secretariat assistance.
- Coordinate reviews of the QPA governance documents (i.e. Terms of Reference and Charter).
- Prepare, in consultation with the QPA EPS Working Group, and implement an annual program of works and budget.
- Prepare scope of works and manage consultants as required for projects in the work program by the QPA EPS working group.
- Review relevant draft policies and legislation that may affect Ports and provide a summary/briefing to the EPS Working Group and QPA Executive.
- Coordinate submission preparation for the QPA on policy matters affecting Ports that come up from time to time.
- Arrange engagement activities with external stakeholders (meetings, forums, workshops).
- Represent QPA externally within industry representative groups, government working groups and commercial or industrial partnerships. Advocate for QPA on port related specialist matters maintaining impartiality and confidentiality.
- Keep QPA informed of emerging state, national and international policy, legislation and trends relevant to Ports.
- Identify and understand key challenges and emerging issues across Qld Ports (such as GBR matters, dredging, ESG/sustainability, emissions, climate change, biosecurity).
About You
The ideal candidate will have experience in providing advice on complex matters including environmental management sustainability, and climate related matters such as decarbonisation and adaptation in a maritime setting, particularly within a government environment. You will bring the following skills and experience:
- The applicant will be required to undertake a Police clearance and hold a current Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) or the ability to obtain a MSIC within three months of commencing employment.
- Qualifications in Biological Science; Environmental Science or other discipline relevant to the position.
- Advanced Skills in Microsoft Suite
- Possession of a current Queensland Open Driver’s Licence.
- Demonstrated understanding of Commonwealth and Queensland Legislation, Policies and Australian Standards applicable for environment, climate change and sustainability, in a maritime setting, especially Great Barrier Reef requirements.
- Demonstrated experience in project or contract management.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental management in a maritime setting, especially in dredging, biosecurity and marine offsets
- Strong analytical skills to identify opportunities and solutions in complex issues and monitor performance over time.
- Well-developed organisational skills including ability to manage competing priorities and demands without affecting quality of service delivery.
