Principal Advisor Environment (Projects) Brisbane or Mackay – 2 Year Full-time Fixed Term Contract

Reporting to the Senior Manager Environment, the Principal Advisor Environment will be responsible for leading the environmental approval processes for complex port infrastructure projects conducted by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP). This role will develop scopes of work to engage external consultants for marine and terrestrial baseline surveys, guide environmental risk assessments, and ensure all necessary environmental approvals are secured at federal, state, and local levels. The role will also coordinate regulatory stakeholder engagement processes and oversee the development of environmental management plans to support approval applications.
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- Lead the environmental approval processes for NQBP projects such as the Bowen Wharf Project from concept to construction/delivery. This includes local, State and Commonwealth approvals.
- Procure and manage the performance of contractors to deliver environmental assessments and drafting of application and supporting information to support approvals.
- Critically review technical reports, management and monitoring plans to ensure they are fit for purpose.
- Develop and maintain project management documents and internal reporting requirements. Track and manage project deliverables.
About You
Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science/ Management, Planning or other relevant field.
- In-depth understanding of State and Commonwealth environmental approvals and permits under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (C’wealth) and Planning Act 2016 (Qld).
- Experience developing scopes of work for environmental studies, managing environmental consultants, and overseeing environmental risk assessments.
- Ability to apply marine and ecological science principles in assessing project impacts and supporting approval processes.
- Strong project management skills, with the capacity to coordinate multiple environmental approval processes simultaneously and drive them to timely completion.
- The applicant will be required to undertake a Police clearance and hold a current Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) or the ability to obtain a MSIC within three months of commencing employment.
