The Role

We are seeking a motivated Trainee Field Technician/Hydrographer to join our Mackay-based North Queensland Operations team. This rare trainee opportunity offers hands-on experience, formal qualifications, and one-on-one mentoring to launch your career in hydrography.

You will learn how to install, maintain, and operate environmental monitoring stations, collect high-quality data, and support a range of water monitoring projects. As part of your development, you'll complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography) and gain industry-recognised training including 4WD and advanced first aid.

The Day to Day

  • Assist in delivering best-practice environmental monitoring services.
  • Support the installation, servicing, and maintenance of automatic environmental monitoring stations.
  • Collect and verify environmental data using specialist software.
  • Maintain accurate field records, observations, and calibrations.
  • Help measure water flow in rivers, creeks, and drains.
  • Assist with manual sampling from surface water and groundwater.
  • Travel to remote regions of Queensland for short weekday trips.

The Essentials

  • Interest in environmental monitoring, sampling, or hydrographic work.
  • Qualification in environmental science, water resources, or similar (desirable).
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Ability to work well in a team and take guidance from mentors.
  • Manual driver's licence (4WD experience desirable).
  • Ability to swim.
  • Eligible to enrol in the Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography)
