Protech are currently recruiting for an experienced Welding & Coatings Inspector to join our team for an immediate start at Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal.

The key responsibilities will be:

  • Undertake daily QA/QC field audits on site activities. 
  • Deliver routine QC inspections to nominated Structural Welding repairs at field-based locations at DBCT P/L.
  • Represent DBCT P/L with Engineering Projects and Rotable Spares ITP Hold Points a vendor’s facilities in Mackay.
  • Participate in quality & safety related Investigations (where requested by line manager).
  • Participate in Scope of Work walkovers with stakeholders for technical input/advice (where requested).
  • Formulate and structure welding management QC documentation.
  • Monitoring documentation during use and compilation of MDR packages.
  • Provide ownership of DBCT P/L’s Structural Maintenance and welding ITP process, QA documentation and feedback loop to Managers & related Stakeholders for historical reference.
  • Reporting – preventative, proactive and reactive findings relating to QA non-conformances to nominated roles including the PCSM Superintendent, Engineers, Managers and Supervisors.
  • Qualification and Management of Welding Procedures and the Qualification of welding operators.
  • Provide input to DBCT P/L for welding engineering issues.
  • Recognition of quality non-compliance issues through field-based observations.
  • Provide meeting attendance and technical input at weekly planning meetings.
  • Continuous improvement support with product trials, QA technical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Coaching and mentoring of site teams to recognise and educate QA/QC compliance to ‘best practice ‘industry standards. 
  • Support with Verification of Competency tests with new starters.
  • Participate in QA/QC document control reviews to ensure activity-based risks to DBCT P/L are managed.
  • Auditing of weld management systems and reporting to major stakeholders.
  • Ownership of QA/QC Instrumentation Registers for Protective Coatings equipment
  • Reporting of non-conformances when identified as departures from site specifications.
  • Delivery of services to offsite QA/QC and technical support, minor maintenance items and engineering projects


This role has no accommodation supplied. The successful candidate will either need to reside in the Mackay region or obtain their own accommodation for the duration of employment. 


Requirements for the role: 

The successful candidate will require the following experience/ qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years Structural Steel Industry experience; 5 years minimum in a similar QA/QC role.
  • Experience with electronic and handheld QA instrumentation, kits & software.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical documentation including specifications and safe work procedures to deliver positive QA and Safety outcomes.
  • Exposure to CMMS or Quality Management Systems in previous roles.
  • Trade qualified (Cert III in Engineering–Boilermaker).
  • NACE Level 1 minimum qualification (essential) and willingness to obtain NACE Level 2.
  • As a minimum IWS International Welding Specialist and or AS 2214 Structural Steel Welding Supervisor.
  • Welding Inspection base qualification minimum IWIS International welding Inspector Standard and or Weld Australia Senior Welding Inspector.
  • Post trade experience in heavy fabrication and heavy repair.
  • Weld Test Certified.
  • Cert 4 Training & Assessment or similar (desirable).
  • Intermediate PC User skills in the areas of MS Excel, MS Word & MS Outlook.
  • Experience in writing technical QA/QC reports.
  • Current Working at Heights and Confined Space qualifications (or willing to obtain).
  • EWP licence will be highly regarded.
  • MSIC (or willing to obtain).
  • Construction White Card (or willing to obtain).
  • Current Driver's Licence.
